    February 10, 2010:
Club President's Message for the Valentine's Day:

    To Live is to Love

The month of February reminds us all of the love we have for our beloved! Love is an all-time theme in the poems and books we read, songs we listen to, the movies we watch and in the very lives we live! Love as we know it, is the most overused and abused word. Wars are fought, won or lost in the name of Love. But what do we really mean we say, “I love you!” In this week of the hearts, let us take time to ponder about Love.

Love is universal -- In the very core of what makes us human, is the boundless capacity of the human heart!  Now unlike things such as food, pets, hobbies and even work – some of which, we can say, “we love..,” most if not all of us aspire for true and ideal love that  lasts long before the lovers are gone, as in Romeo & Juliet, the Titanic, and how about your experiences?  Love transcends the mere physical attractions (we normally refer to us, lust), as one may observe an old couple holding hands in Patterson Park.  Love is a free choice. The power of love resides in the freedom that allows the lovers to grow and be the best they can ever be together! Love needs time. How often is “sometimes?” for lovers, a day seemed like a century of longing!  This applies to both time apart and time that lovers are together.  While philanthropy is love for the general humanity, love for a specific human being requires time! Love is nurtured by friendship. The more we know, the more we love! Truly, it is impossible for us to love whom and what we do not know! As we ‘like’ what we learn, ‘like’ blooms into love!  And finally, love is strengthened by sacrifice. To put the other person’s interest and well-being over and above our own, this is the truest sign of Love. It is in difficulties that we are able to build on reliable coping mechanisms that forge strong bonds of caring for each other!

Love is the most powerful force in humanity and its only weakness is indifference! From the “I” in L-“i”-ve to the “O” in L-“o” –ve, is the transition from “I” myself into “O” the other(s). It is when we decide to serve others that show we truly care!  In Toastmasters, we learn how to express ourselves better, to understand and evaluate each other, we all share a dream of being good public speakers and at the end of the day, we hope to speak clearly to those that matter to us -- our loved ones! On behalf of your Executive who cares about your progress in the Club, may I wish all of you an exciting Valentine’s Day! We challenge you to serve the others by actively trying out roles in the Club meetings!

    February 01, 2010:
Club President's Message for the Toastmasters' Week:

    Begin again!

On the occasion of the celebrations of Toastmasters Week, it is important to remember and live the reason why we have decided to join this wonderful club! I remember that on my first meeting, I volunteered for a table topic about “a cat which fell in love with a whale!” I can still remember my batch mates who were guests then and Executive members now. Only three of us are left since that very first time.  After that meeting, as a guest I commented how I appreciate the positive feedback in the evaluations. And in the next meeting, I submitted the application form and became a member of Metrospeakers’ Toastmasters Club-- it was in August of 2008!

Ralph C. Smedley founded the first Toastmaster Club in October 22, 1924 in California, United States.  Did you know that in 1930, they changed the name to Toastmasters International, because of 30 clubs in British Columbia, Canada?  At present, we have more than 12, 500 clubs with over 250,000 members across 108 countries. Some people say, past is past and is long forgotten, but I say, those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. History offers all of us a record of valued lessons. It is in knowing were we come from, that we are assured of where we intend to go! History reminds us of our dreams and how close we are to fulfilling them! History forges in us the courage, perseverance and determination to affirm fundamental questions such as: “do I really want to be a good public speaker?”

Two years have passed and modesty aside, I am on my way to completing my Advanced Communication Silver (over 20 speeches delivered). I mentioned this to show all of you, by example that it is possible, if only you put your heart and mind and actually speak in public! And technically, the members are not ‘public,’ we are friends who want to help you improve!  In celebration of Toastmasters Week, I challenge all of you to coordinate with your mentors and schedule your speeches.  Promise yourselves to never loose the enthusiasm of the beginnings as you complete each project and deliver each speech, always keeping in mind the last evaluations. Never stop improving! On behalf of the Executive, may I assure you, the members and most welcome guests that in Toastmasters, we are never alone! Each member and by duty the Executive will walk beside you to show and assist you to become the public speaker you want to be! Let me end with a quotation from our founder, Ralph Smedley, “if you know how and when to speak, and when to remain silent, your chances of real success are proportionately increased!”

    January 14, 2010

Franco Teleg is the winner of the December 2009 Bud Singbeil Memorial Award.

This award is named after Bud Singbeil, a vibrant Toastmaster who was a traveling salesman. Bud was a big husky fellow who sold beauty products for spas and hair salons – proof that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Bud traveled a lot and made it a point to check out many Toastmaster clubs while on the road. Marc Hurtubise and Sheree Gable, both from MetroSpeakers, met him at a conference back at 2003 and he included MetroSpeakers in his visit shortly afterwards. During his visit to our club he blew those in attendance away with a great table topic and a heartfelt closing comments. Sadly some years ago Bud suddenly passed away. The MetroSpeakers ToastMasters Club awards the Bud Singbeil plaque in his honour twice a year: once around Christmas and once again at the end of June/beginning of July. The award stands for excellence and dedication in our ToastMasters club.

January 01, 2010: New Year's Message from the Club President

    Life is Change

Look around you and see change is everywhere. Seasons remind us of change. Living or non-living things change. From the grass to the trees even the rocks and the mountains, all these change. Most of us overlook that biologically we all change, from the falling hairs, changing skin, one can just look at the mirror and see the lines in our faces. However, only living things have somewhat a choice to react to change. While animals react through instinct, human beings react through freedom of choice.

The end of 2009 marked the half-year term of the Executive and a number of changes were adopted to make our Club vibrant with energy and passion. We have initiated the holding of Special Meetings every first week of the month to prioritize the new members’ speeches, show case members’ other talents and acknowledge birthday celebrants of the month. We welcomed Irene Dong as VP Public Relations and Alok Sarkar as Deputy Executive Officer for Membership and Education, and partly as webmaster. We activated our new website using Toastmaster International web tools.  We grew in numbers with new members registering on board reaching to a total of about thirty-four.  And so we were given the Smedley Award for also retaining and renewing existing members. We proactively encouraged active members to participate in committees to have leadership training in the Executive. We also started the Metrospeakers’ Pledge to remind us all, the raison d’etre of being Toastmasters.  This is to be recited every time we welcome new members to our Club.  We also made sure in every meeting that we have the progress chart for speech planning as reference for members. We made sure that each member, especially new ones, have their mentors to assist them. And we just had a wonderful Christmas party with more than half of all the members in attendance. This is only to name a few of the major changes for the betterment of our Club.

The beginning of 2010 offers opportunities and challenges. To name some innovations, the Executive decided to conduct an open assembly Club meeting to empower members to decide on issues that affect the Club and make it more exciting.  At the same time, to offer hands-on experience on parliamentarian procedures. We will also intensify target reminders for the requirements to earn the highest recognition for our club, the Distinguished President’s Club!  It is the hope of the Executive to codify into writing all club procedures representative of our unique identity in Metrospeakers, and many more -- for what our mind can conceive, together we will all achieve. Let this new year, not become a mere change of calendar, for it seems nothing has changed, but there in one measurable change that we can all realize – the change in ourselves! The reality is that whether we like or not there is change. The Chinese character for change means either an adversity or an opportunity. And the critical part in this process is deciding whether to passively accept change or to

to proactively act on change.    On behalf of the Executive, may I wish you all a Prosperous New Year!
