Next Meeting

Our next Toastmasters meeting will be held on Thursday September 2nd, 2010, 7 - 9 PM.  The theme of this week's meeting is Communication.

Have you ever had a miscommunication with a friend, colleague, or family member?  Developing effective communication skills can benefit each of us, both in our careers and in our personal lives.

Effective communication is multi-faceted.  Communication is not only verbal -- it is also non-verbal.  We communicate with our body language – posture, gestures, and facial expressions.  In fact, researchers say a considerable amount of our communication is through body language, much of which is at the subconscious level.

We’ve all heard that “Men Are From Mars, and Women Are From Venus”.  Our gender influences how we communicate.  Women and men have different styles of communication.  Our culture also greatly influences how we communicate with others.  “Emoticons", the little pictures or signs we use to communicate feelings in emails J, have many versions, including an Eastern version and a Western version.  Speaking of emoticons, technology and social media add a new dimension to the challenges of effective communication.  Members and guests, please join us in a discussion about communication on Thursday, September 2

Meeting Venue

We meet Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the Community Room of Metropolis at Metrotown shopping mall (460 - 4800 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC, V5H 4N2). The Community Room is located within the shopping mall on the 4th floor (also known as the Office Galleria level) right above the Sears department store. The shopping mall is accessible via skytrain (Metrotown station), bus (Metrotown hub), and is only 15 minutes drive from downtown Vancouver. There is plenty of free parking.
