The
month of February reminds us all of the love we have for our beloved! Love is
an all-time theme in the poems and books we read, songs we listen to, the
movies we watch and in the very lives we live! Love as we know it, is the most
overused and abused word. Wars are fought, won or lost in the name of Love. But
what do we really mean we say, “I love you!” In this week of the hearts, let us
take time to ponder about Love.
Love is universal -- In the very core of what makes us human, is the boundless capacity
of the human heart! Now unlike things
such as food, pets, hobbies and even work – some of which, we can say, “we
love..,” most if not all of us aspire for true and ideal love that lasts long before the lovers are gone, as in
Romeo & Juliet, the Titanic, and how about your experiences?Love transcends the mere physical attractions
(we normally refer to us, lust), as one may observe an old couple holding hands
in PattersonPark. Love is
a free choice. The power of love resides in the freedom that allows the
lovers to grow and be the best they can ever be together! Love needs time. How often is “sometimes?”for lovers, a day seemed like a century of longing! This applies to both time apart and time that
lovers are together.While philanthropy
is love for the general humanity, love for a specific human being requires
time! Love is nurtured by friendship.
The more we know, the more we love! Truly, it is impossible for us to love whom
and what we do not know! As we ‘like’ what we learn, ‘like’ blooms into
love! And finally, love is strengthened by sacrifice. To put the other
person’s interest and well-being over and above our own, this is the truest
sign of Love. It is in difficulties that we are able to build on reliable
coping mechanisms that forge strong bonds of caring for each other!
Love is the most powerful force in
humanity and its only weakness is indifference!
From the “I” in L-“i”-ve to the “O” in L-“o” –ve, is the transition from “I”
myself into “O” the other(s). It is when we decide to serve others that show we
truly care!In Toastmasters, we learn
how to express ourselves better, to understand and evaluate each other, we all
share a dream of being good public speakers and at the end of the day, we hope
to speak clearly to those that matter to us -- our loved ones! On behalf of
your Executive who cares about your progress in the Club, may I wish all of you
an exciting Valentine’s Day! We challenge you to serve the others by actively
trying out roles in the Club meetings!
Next Meeting
Can you feel the excitement and anticipation in the
air? While the City is gearing up for the Vancouver Winter Olympics (Feb 12-28,
2010), MetroSpeakers is preparing an upcoming meeting to celebrate the Chinese
New Year and Valentine’s Day.
Chinese New Year literally means the “Spring Festival”
in Chinese. It symbolizes the beginning of the year and the start of all things
great. It begins on the first day of the first lunar month, and this year it’s
on February 14th, which coincides with the western Valentine’s Day.
As the Vice President of Public Relations for
MetroSpeaker and the Chair of the upcoming meeting, I would like to personally
invite you to join us for an educational and fun celebration
night at the Firefighter’s club. Did I mention you will also enjoy yummy
appetizers for a low price of zero?
What: MetroSpeakers
Valentine's Day & Chinese New Year Speech & Social When: Thursday, February 11th, 7 P.M. to 9 P.M. Where: Boardroom @ Firefighter's Club 6515 Bonsor St. in Metrotown (map)
Guests, this is the perfect opportunity to check out a
Toastmasters club. We will be having our regular table topics and speeches. I
just took a peek at the schedule, and I can say you’ll be in for a nice treat
this Thursday (besides the food). Members, please sign up roles for this
meeting before they are all taken. Remember to bring your manual to get points
for your leadership manual.
Our club has a diverse membership in terms of age,
gender, education and speaking experience. We have a good mix of novice and
advanced speakers and we have very good evaluators and mentors to help you get
to your next level. We are a very friendly & supportive group!
